A walk with neighbors, a new dance step, a chance to try adaptive cycling or a thoughtful discussion; RiverMead’s Active Aging Week offered many ways to participate. Held October 5–11, the celebration brought residents together for a week of movement, creativity and connection at our not-for-profit LifePlan community in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
The festivities reflected something central to life at RiverMead: wellness includes learning, exploring interests and building relationships alongside physical exercise. Throughout the week, residents found opportunities to engage both body and mind, with activities ranging from yoga and tai chi to storytelling, art and music.
Fresh Air, New Steps and Accessible Cycling
The community walk and roll brought neighbors together to enjoy fresh air and timeoutdoors on campus. Connecting with nature is a familiar part of daily life in the Monadnock Region, and the outing offered a chance to share that experience with others.
A Scandinavian dance tutorial invited residents to explore traditional dance and learn new steps together. It combined movement with cultural discovery, reminding us that trying something new can be as valuable as maintaining a familiar routine.
Northeast Passage’s accessible cycling program offered another way to get moving. Adaptive bikes accommodated different abilities and gave residents an opportunity to enjoy cycling. Offering varied ways to participate helps make community wellness welcoming and accessible.
Keeping Minds Engaged
The week’s schedule also included a wellness roundtable, a storytelling hour, an artist reception and tie-dye. Guided meditation offered time to pause, while music and group activities created opportunities to connect.
Together, these experiences reflected the culture of a senior living community where residents can pursue their interests and discover new ones. A conversation, a creative project or the opportunity to learn something new can contribute to well-being just as meaningfully as a fitness class.
A Community Celebration to Finish the Week
Friday’s community barbecue and RiverMead County Fair & Farmers Market rounded out the festivities. Special guests Gilbert and Meadow, the party pigs, joined the fun, while our CEO, Eric Piekarz, took a turn in the dunk tank.
It was a fitting finish to a week that celebrated participation in many forms. Whether residents joined an outdoor activity, explored a new skill or gathered with friends, there were plenty of ways to be involved.
